Crispy Potato Sticks
Crispy Potato Sticks are the most popular potato snacks in my house. They are potatoes that are cut into the shape of sticks and deep fried to a golden brown colour. Basically, they are skinny french fries.
You can season them with various flavours depending on how the kiddos and the adults like it at home. Some options are salt-pepper (classic), chaat masala, red chilli powder, paprika powder, peri-peri powder and even Italian seasoning.
I make these often as they make an excellent option for snack boxes and a short evening snack.
Ingredients for Crispy Potato Sticks
Potatoes!! – My favourite vegetable ever!
The other ingredients are vinegar, cooking oil, salt, pepper, and any other seasonings of your choice.
How to make Crispy Potato Sticks
Wash the potatoes and peel them. Cut the potatoes into slices that are about 0.5 cm thick. Pile the slices into a small deck and cut vertically to get the stick like shape.
Gather all the cut up potatoes sticks and add them to a bowl of cold water. Add salt and vinegar to the water and place the bowl in the fridge for a minimum of one hour.
Remove from the fridge after one hour, drain the water and spread it out on a dish towel. Dry it with the dish towel and prepare the oil for frying.
(At this stage, if you want to put some away some potato sticks for freezing, you can do that now. Place them in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer and they will be good for a couple of months)
Frying the Crispy Potato Sticks
Place a pan/ kadai with oil on a medium flame. Once the oil is warm, add one potato stick to see if it floats to the top. This will indicate if the oil is warm or not.
Add one batch of potato sticks without crowding the oil. Stir the potatoes in the oil so that they fry evenly. Once they look golden brown, remove from the oil and drain the excess oil on a kitchen tissue paper.
Transfer the fried potato sticks to a bowl and add the seasonings – salt, pepper and chaat masala. You may even add red chilli powder, paprika powder, oregano/Italian seasonings or peri-peri powder, too.
Serve these Delicious Crispy Potato sticks as a snack in lunch boxes.
Shelf Life and Storage
These crispy potato sticks have a shelf life on the counter for 2-3 days. If you have fried all the pieces of potatoes into a crispy, they will be ok on the countertop for 2 days. Else, it’s best consumed within 2-3 hours.
You can, however, peel and cut and soak them in water overnight in the fridge to fry them up the next day. Another option is to place the cut potatoes in the water for up to an hour, remove them from the water, dry them on a tea towel and freeze them up. These frozen sticks will be good to for the next 3 months.
